Introductory

A fun introduction to all of the basics of gymnastics. Intro gymnastics classes are split into three age groups in order to maximize the learning experience: ages 3-5, ages 6-12+, and ages 12-adult. Instruction will be on all of the gymnastics events: floor, vault, beam, bars, rings, pommel horse, p-bars, tumbltrak, and trampoline.  To see what will be covered in these classes, please see our skill sheet.   Attire: Leotard, t-shirt, athletic shorts, or sweatpants with elastic waistband or drawstring.  No pockets.  Shirts must be completely tucked in.  Bare feet; no socks or shoes permitted. 

Preteam

These classes will focus on the gender-apropriate equipment, plus some trampoline and tumbltrak. Instruction is provided by members of UMDGC's gymnastics team coaching staff, and current and former competivite gymnasts. Topaz

UMDGC's Topaz class is designed for female gymnasts who are eligible to be on UMDGC's Girls or Xcel teams, but who are not interested in competing or are unable to make the commitment to be on the team.

Ages 3-5

Over the course of the session, a sense of self-confidence and body awareness will be instilled through skill repetition on age-appropriate equipment. The class will take place on age-appropriate equipment to maximize safety.

Parents may go into the gym on the first day of class only.  Participants must be potty-trained; no diapers permitted. Gymnasts that are 5 years old and who have passed their level 0 test may enroll in the Ages 6-12+ Introductory class.

The activities that are covered in the class will improve the attributes common to all sports: coordination, power, balance, discipline, and self-esteem. Designed for level 0 (beginner) and level 1 (advanced beginner). Higher level gymnasts are permitted to register though the experience level of the coaching staff and the structure of the class is not guaranteed to make the practice as productive as preteam classes.  

Gymnasts that are 5 years old and who have passed their level 0 test may enroll in this class.

This class is open to beginner (level 0) to intermediate (level 3/preteam) gymnasts. For those looking for a future challenge, this class can be used as a stepping stone towards the UMDGC Xcel team.

Preteam
Level 2+

The preteam is a non-competing program designed for gymnasts interested in joining UMDGC’s gymnastics teams (boys, girls, Xcel). Gymnasts will learn all of the skills required to compete the first USAG competitive level. There is a great emphasis on form and technique, and an introduction to flexibility and strength training. In order to move to UMDGC's team for the upcoming season, the gymnast must pass a skills test no later than mid-August. Once the gymnast has passed the skills test, s/he may join UMDGC's gymnastics team between June and August. Preteamers that pass their skills test by mid-January may have the opportunity to compete in non-sanctioned competitions between April and June.

Girls Topaz
Non-competitive class for girls eligible for Xcel and Girls teams

UMDGC's Topaz class is designed for female gymnasts who are eligible to be on UMDGC's Girls or Xcel teams, but who are not interested in competing or are unable to make the commitment to be on the team. The class will focus on skills at the level that the gymnast would be competing. Gymnasts will be able to move up levels if they achieve 90% of their skills at the current level, but it does not change their level eligiblity within the USAG competitive program.

Topaz gymnasts will train with the Xcel Platinum team. The pass is valid for 10 practices. Register at any time.

Requirements: Females who are eligible for USAG Girls Levels 3+ or Xcel Gold or higher who do not wish to compete for any reason.
