JAZZ & Musical Theater

Ballet-based, high energy style of dance that has evolved to incorporate many other dance genres including contemporary and hip hop. Jazz dance emcompasses some foundations from ballet. Focus on body isolations, turns, leaps, and jumps. Students will gain strength, flexibility, endurance, and coordination. Some levels may be combined for the Summer session.

Jazz 1

Basics of jazz are introduced including, but not limited to, jazz squares, isolations, turns, spotting, basic leaps, and jumps. Floorwork may be introduced.

Jazz 2 & 3

Increased emphasis on reviewing the prior level steps, skills and combinations. Focus on reinforcing technique, spotting with turns, isolation and more intricate combinations.  Learning to incorporate arm movement with footwork combinations as well as floor work are covered. 

Jazz 3

Increased emphasis on reinforcing technique, spotting with turns and isolation. More intricate and faster combinations, emphasis on flexibility, floor work are covered. 

Jazz 4 & 5

Greater emphasis on refining technique. More intricate leaps, jumps, and turns including tour jetes, calypso’s, and fuete turns. These classes may perform two numbers in the recital.

 

Musical Theatre

Get out your jazz hands for an exciting theatre jazz class! Dancers will learn to express themselves through basic jazz steps and combinations to Broadway/show tunes.
Working with props/hats may be included.

Jazz Funk

Jazz funk is a high energy, upbeat style that is often performed to contemporary pop and hip hop music. A hybrid dance style that combines elements of jazz and funk styles. This class does not participate in the recital.
